A General Approach to the Treatment of Post- traumatic Disorders: The Croatian Experience

Posttraumatic stress disorder presents an important medical and social problem in the Republic of Croatia with prevalence of 10-30% depending on the population, and they are mostly total Victims of traumatic experiences during Croatian War. Posttraumatic stress disorder, for Croatian Medicine and Public in general is not just one of Diagnostical Categories, it is much more than that, it is, one could say, something as War for itself, some as War Trauma. This kind of Disorder in Croatia becomes some kind of National Particularity, and War made and it's still making a new Victims. In the beginning of the 90's, knowledge about PTSD in Croatia was pretty poor and medical textbooks of Psychiatry had only few lines about that particular diagnostical entity. That's why therapeutic approaches based on experiences of psychiatrists and their ability to be extra- educated as fast as possible from various foreign literatures. During those times we tried to combine our own psychiatric experience with theorized knowledge from foreign literature. Therapeutic work, as well as direct experience of relationship with the patient who has PTSD, motivated us to try to define our own therapeutic approach that has been based on our experience or possibilities (one could say education) that psychiatrists in The Republic of Croatia have. One particular motive was the fact that society made this kind of patients stigmatized. On the basis of our 10-year clinical experience in treating PTSD and detailed analysis of related literature our team compiled the proposed guidelines for treatment of PTSD. The established guidelines are independently developed, clinically proven at our Clinic.
