A comparative study of the oxide growth and stability of modified inconel-600 electrodes
The surface modification of inconel-600 by electrochemical, hydrothermal and chemical treatments was studied. Electrochemical modification was carried out using potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarization of the electrode in 1 mol dm-3 NaOH. Hydrothermal modification was achieved by exposure of the specimen in an autoclave to elevated temperatures and pressures. Inconel-600 was chemically modified using potassium dichromate solution. All of these treatments included a growth of an oxide film which was characterized by cyclic voltammgrams in alkaline solution. The most efficient oxide growth was achieved using square-wave polarization, followed by a triangular potentiodynamic polarization, potentiostatic polarization, hydrothermal and chemical modifications, respectively. Stability of the oxide film was determined by anodic potentiodynamic polarization and open-circuit potentiaol measurements in 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid. The most stable was hydrothermally oxidized surface. The electrode modified by square-wave pulses was less stable compared to the electrode modified by triangular-time potential program.
