Urbs et Rurs, future of regionalism in the architecture of the age of globalisation
What is happening with the third area, the interspaces which are neither the centre nor the margin, neither urban areas nor protected nature. What is the status of the territories where natural and man-made surroundings overlap, where the natural elements are not spectacular, where urban network is sparse and activities are of low intensity. Such spaces can be defined as countryside or rural areas. They are outside the focus of internal and external reflections, and previous waves of modernisation (and de- modernisation) were slow and not so prominent. It is only now that they are beginning to find the ways to be entered on the global world map and take part in the redistributions of identities, economy culture, etc. They may share similar fates, but still, all these countryside or rural areas are topics of their own. It needs to be pointed out that out-of-city areas are described as “common”, “normal”, “areas of the low intensity of change”. Such areas have the potential of being new centres regardless of poor regulation of their development.
