Structural development of central somatosensory network in the late fetal human brain
In the present study we continue investigation of the prospective somatosensory cortex and thalamus in fetal human brain using combined MR/histological approach with special emphasis on transient lamination of the subplate and the cortical plate (CP). We showed that maturation of somatosensory thalamus precedes differentiation of the somatosensory cortex. Organization of the somatosensory cortex in the early preterm infant is closely related to accumulation and penetration of thalamocortical fibers. These results are significant for interpretation of early tactile and pain evoked activity in human preterm cortex.
