Bone morphogenetic proteins in inflammation
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are members of the transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily and control multiple organogenetic processes, cell proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis, and patterning of multiple organs from all three developmental envelopes including the skeleton, kidney, heart, pancreas, and eye. BMPs also have a role in inflammatory disorders via their actions on the immune system and inflammation, specifically in systemic diseases, including chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, iron deficiency anemia, vascular disease, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, and in patients with implanted BMP2- and BMP7-based bone devices (Vukicevic et al. 2014).
