Computer Networks for Geolocation-Targeted Communication
There are two common paradigms of accessing data and services in networked systems today, depending on what type of addressing scheme is used to identify the communication endpoints. In host-centric network architecture, endpoints are addressable by their network identifiers [1]. For example, in IP-based networks, hosts are identified by IP addresses or DNS names, while telephone networks use phone numbers as endpoint identifiers. Host-centric network architecture is useful when both the data and their source/destination are important to the requestor. If the same piece of information is available on multiple hosts in the network, the requestor may select the preferred one using the corresponding host identifier. For applications where the data or services are of primary concern, but the actual providers are of less importance or even irrelevant, a content-centric network architecture is more appropriate [2]. In a content-centric network, data items, rather than hosting devices, become addressable units visible to the requestors. The network infrastructure is responsible for keeping track of the distribution of the data over the network nodes and for routing of user requests for named data to those nodes that host them. In our research, we are developing a model and an infrastructure for a third type of network architecture that supports geolocation-targeted communication. Geolocation-targeted communication enables new paradigm of development of future applications and cyber-physical systems where remote communication endpoints are specified by location on Earth, such as latitude/longitude, street address in the city, or room within the building, without knowing in advance who will actually provide the service. Actual communication endpoint is selected by the network during the application run time from those objects that are operating at a given location when the service is necessary. This type of network architecture is intended for interaction with smart and mobile networked objects spread throughout the environment that provide data and services related to their immediate physical surroundings to the remote users. Using geolocation-based addressing, end users or other smart objects discover, connect to, and communicate with mobile remote objects as long as they are located within a given geographic area. In this talk, we present a conceptual framework of a geolocation-centric network architecture and outline several application domains, such as geolocation-based social networking, volunteer-based environment sensing [3], territory surveillance, and remote operations.
