Let's Put Some Sense into Assessing Writing
Assessing is not always easy. Unlike grading a test that checks student’s use of grammar or vocabulary, grading a paper often proves challenging. What do we look for in a paper? The correct use of tenses? Sentences that go beyond three or four words strung together? Perfect punctuation? Linking words? Extensive vocabulary? What about creativity – is that important? What about the student’s effort and progress – do we take that into account? We look at these and other elements that teachers take into consideration when assessing writing and try to see what is really important, and what we might have been focusing on unjustly. Based on research, current and developing curricula, and other documents, we discuss the criteria for assessing writing. We hope that discussing and applying the criteria in the workshop will help teachers to assess what matters in writing.
