Design and Certification of Composite Wing for Special Applications
This work describes the design process of a 10m wingspan wing that will be used in a wind energy production system for high altitude winds. Main focus of the work is on the finite element analysis showing stresses and buckling modes of this ultra-light carbon-fibre wing. The first part of this thesis describes the general requirements of the overall design. That includes main features of the wing together with relevant manufacturing aspects. Further described are the design load cases which will be used for proof of strength, stiffness and stability. Second part describes the FEM approach including the 2D-orthotropic definition for composite material, mesh description and applied boundary conditions. Also the applied failure criteria are described. Last part of the thesis describes the performed analyses and their results.
