Clara Sereni's perspective of being a woman
In this paper the aim is to present a woman and the problematics of the female identity in the Italian contemporary literature. More precisely, in this work we focus on Clara Sereni's novels, whose literary style connects in a specific way female instability and suffering to the problems of mother-daughter relationship and to the state of being a mother. Motherhood in her work is analyzed from various points of view, especially focusing on the individual and collective demands of the state of being a mother and pointing out to its spiritual, emotional, and social importance. By giving numerous examples of motherhood and mother-daughter relations, Sereni describes the female identity as multiple, fragmented, reconstructed, indefinite, and unique, starting from the hypothesis that the motherhood is extremely important for every woman. The authoress describes the importance of mother figure and relation to this figure, as well as to the motherhood itself, through the characters who are mothers and those who are non-mothers, in order to show that in each case, being a mother or not, a female identity is incontestably and inescapably determined by the motherhood, and she confirms it through her literary style in particular.
