Improvement of Passenger Handling Technology by Implementation of Biometrics
The terrorist attacks in the United States on 11 September 2001 highlighted the need for the world air travel industry to improve airport security. Since those tragic events all security measures from departure to arrival, including those occuring in-flight, have been strengthened. As part of continuing efforts to increase security and restore public confidence, governments, airlines, airports and their industry partners are focused on the implementation of biometrics based technologies into airport security system. Certain sections of the passenger's travel, like the part between check-in and boarding have been identified as security vulnerabilities so the integration of biometrics should be extended to boarding controll to make sure that the passenger intending to fly doesn't use someone else's boarding card. Automated biometric processes would ensure that the biometric details of the holder of the document or card matches the biometric data stored on the document presented for inspection. Various kinds of biometric details can be used for identity confirmation: person's facial features, iris, fingerprint, face, voice or hand geometry. Each technique is analised with regards to several factors, including accuracy, intrusiveness and public acceptability, consistency and speed of measurement, reliability and stability over time, and all associated costs. Some applications of biometric technologies implemented and actively tested at major international airports are described in the paper as well as basic guidelines for the implementation of biometrics at airports in Croatia.
