Correlation between German and Croatian legal phraseology - A Sociolinguistic Perspective
phrases in ancient legal texts of Austrian and Croatian Criminal Procedure Codes represent the main object of this research. The goal of the research is to discover which collocations and phrases are used in Austrian ancient law and to determine the extent of concordance of those structures with their equivalents in Croatian version of the same law, as well as their frequency in each law. The corpus of the research encompasses the texts of Austrian Criminal Procedure Code of 1873 and Croatian Criminal Procedure Code of 1875 (further: CPC). The former includes altogether 494 articles, and the latter 425 articles. For practical reasons and for the sake of scientific reliability of the data, 292 articles (12 chapters) were analyzed and compared in each text. Modern versions of the two laws, both enacted in 2006, represent the second part of our sources. Methodology used in the research is known as vertical contrastive analysis. In our corpora we found expressions consisting of three or more words, which we determined as poly-lexical phrases (in most cases prepositional phrases), but most frequent expressions in both corpora are binary expressions that can be denoted as collocations. They occur in three types of structures: a) verb + noun, b) adjective + noun, c) noun + noun. Examples of each structure will be discussed contrastively with special emphasis on their frequency in the two ancient legal texts. In last part of the paper the results of the contrastive analysis will be compared with the phraseology in the contemporary versions of the Austrian CPC and the Croatian CPC (both published in 2006) from socio-linguistic point of view.
