A Lt C2 Tauriscan fractional coin from the Zvonimirovo – Veliko polje cemetery
The authors discuss a recent find of a small Tauriscan silver coin with a depiction of a horse on both sides found in a Lt C2 (200-150 BC) grave at the Zvonimirovo - Veliko polje cemetery (north-west Croatia). This find is contextualised by a review of all known Tauriscan small silver coins with this unusual “duplicate” depiction regardless of their type, a general discussion of the absolute chronology of Tauriscan coins of the Varaždin and Đurđevac type, as well as by a comparison with an almost contemporaneous north-central European typologically parallel coin type. The latter also occasioned a discussion of possible connections between these two occurrences of an identical typological solution. It is concluded that the Zvonimirovo coin was issued simultaneously with early Tauriscan tetradrachms, of which it is a fraction (1/24th). Its chronological position conforms to and, in its turn, supports, the revised, archaeologically corroborated absolute chronology of the earliest Tauriscan coin types. Finally, it might have exercised a certain influence upon the production of contemporaneous north-central European Roseldorf-Nĕmčice H obols.
