Relation between boron concentration and tolerance traits to western corn rootworm in maize roots
According to the elemental defense hypothesis (Boyd, 2007), boron (B) may play a role in plant defence against herbivorous animals (Ruuhola et al., 2011). In this study, we estimated the relationship among B concentration in maize root and three root traits associated with the tolerance of maize plant to larvae of western corn rootworm (WCR), a major pest of maize in Europe and in the USA (Šimić et al., 2007). The pest has been present in Europe from the mid-1980s, and since then has spread to many European countries, especially countries in Southeast Europe. WCR larvae feed on maize roots and crops can suffer serious damages. In WCR control it is very important to estimate all resistance traits as well as conduct research on possible mechanisms between maize, WCR and the environment.
