Pakoštane - Crkvina

During 2010, the fifth campaign of investigation into the site Pakoštane - Crkvina was carried out. The investigations revealed the remains of the religious architectural complex with St Mary's Church. The complex lies some hundred metres from the shore of Vransko Lake. Remains of a church of longitudinal shape with a semicircular apse at the east were discovered in the excavations. Alongside the church itself, on the northern and southern sides, side rooms of longitudinal plan were found ; the northern ends in the east with a straight wall, and the southern with a semicircular apse. Also in 2010, research was continued inside the northern and southern side rooms, in the area south east of the church, that is, between the southern wall of the church and the western wall of the southern room , and in the north west part of the complex, between the eastern wall of the norther room and the apse of the church. In these parts, 7 more graves were found, and the total number of graves excavated now comes to 11. The finds of this campaign can be dated in outline to the period grom the 9th to the 15th century, although most come from the 12th to the 15th. Particular mention should be made of the the find of a grave vault (grave 8) painted with red crosses, and the find of a masonry structure of large blocks with an in situ preserved base of a marble Romanesque baluster in the south east part complex. In the area explored during this year's campaign, fragments of stone church furnishing belonging to the pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic were found, with fragments of pottery and glass vessels and grave finds of jewellery (bronze tendrils, circlet with three nodes) and coins from the 13th to 15th century.
