Latin-script Turkish manuscripts from Bosnia and Herzegovina (19th century)
Twenty-five dictionaries and grammars of the Turkish language, handwritten in the Latin script, can be found in the libraries and archives of Franciscan monasteries in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These manuscripts were written in the nineteenth century, thanks to the diligence of the Bosnian Franciscan friars who either wrote them or copied them from printed Turkish dictionaries and grammars. The oldest of these manuscripts dates from 1815, while the youngest was written in 1874 – just four years before the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The manuscripts of the Bosnian Franciscans were probably the last Latin-script manuscripts written in Turkish about the Turkish language in the long history of European Turkology.
