Erythropoietic aberrations in bone marrow of rats after microwave irradiation

Adult male Wistar rats were exposed to 2.45 Ghz cw (continuous wave) radiofrequency microwave (RF/MW) field 2 hours daily, z days weekly, at power density 5 - 10 mW/cm2. Forty exposed animals were divided into four subgroups in order to be irradiatedfor 4, 16, 30 and 60 hours. Animals were euthanized by exsanguination on final irradiation day of each treated subgroup. Sham-exposed rats were used as the controls. Absolute counts of anuclear cells and erythropoietic precursor cells in bone marrow were estimated, as well as absolute count of mature erythrocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit values in peripheral blood. The cytogenetic analysis of bone marrow vas accomplished by micronucleus test. The data were statistically evalutd ba Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05). The increased values of hemoglobin, hematocrit and erythrocytes count in peripheral blood, as well as micronuclear cells frequency in bone marrow were observed after 16 and 30 irradiation hours. At the same time, absolute counts of anuclear cells, proerythroblasts and basophilic erythroblasts in bone marrow were significantly decreased. We have presumed that subthermogenic RF/MW field initiates transitory aberration of cell proliferation and could result with micronucleus formation in erythropoietic cells. It seemsthat the mononuclar-phagocyte system eliminates micronuclear cells, and stimulates erythropoietic precursor cells for accelerated maturation.
