Tourism is the (only) future for Zadar Islands - myth or reality?
Tourism can be regarded as one of the world's largest industries and a source of jobs for local, regional and national economies. On many islands tourism is the dominant economic activity with over 90% of Gross Domestic Product. At the same time it is identified as a major threat to the region’s sociocultural and ecological sustainability. Development of tourism on Zadar Islands at the beginning of the 21st century transformed them into recreational zones. Once dependent on agriculture, fishing and navigation islands became strongly dependent on tourism. It influenced transformation of landscape, coastal and marine ecosystems, but also provoked socio- cultural changes. Based on statistical data and field research it can be concluded that the tourism has not yet reversed negative socio- economic process on Zadar islands such as for instance population decline and economic stagnation. Tourism can be considered as a future for Zadar Islands but certainly not the only possible one.
