Theatre Education and Students with Disability
Contemporary teaching and training should focus on the diversity of students and inclusive policies of education. Concerning the field of theatre education, the approach to training methods for students with the disability is a real challenge. In this paper, I am trying to present obstacles and possibilities, deficiencies and opportunities of teaching efforts in order to address the needs of theatre students with disabilities. My scope is generalized, with examples from specific case studies. The paper is based on examples from my own and my colleagues’ personal experiences gathered during my twenty years of teaching, but it also considers theoretical approaches and studies from different countries. This opens the possibility to compare the levels of theoretical approaches and practical experiences in different educational systems and different cultures. Lack of experience in theatre education for students with disabilities in Croatia and very modest theoretical and practical efforts in the past few years leave a field of this specific teaching and training methods open to individual teacher's solutions. As each student needs an individual approach and personalized curriculum, in a situation with no system established, it presents a real challenge. The results presented in this paper are pertinent to a particular case from my personal experience, but could be applied in theatre-and-art teaching in a wider context, especially in schools with less experience and without an institutionalized system of education for students with disabilities.
