Velika bijela čaplja Egretta alba
The Great White Egret is a regular but localized breeder in Croatia with an estimated breeding population of 115-180 pairs. It is Endangered nationally. The breeding and wintering populations have increased during the last two decades, particularly in the continental Pannonian Plain, while in the Mediterranean areas they are still rare. The recent population increase, and a color-ringing programe initiated in 2006, has increased the number of recoveries. Recoveries of foreign birds show typical south-westerly and southerly migration routes. Birds in Croatia are partly migratory and have been recovered primarily in Italy along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Sea coasts. Part of the population stays in the Pannonian Plain and attmpts to overwinter along floodplains of large rivers and at commercial fihponds.
