Numerical Simulation of Fan Flow
The paper deals with the simulation of flow in a centrifugal fan with backward-inclined vanes. The fan is a roof fan type with free impeller outflow. The fan pressure and efficiency were predicted for the wide range of flow rates, from the shut-off pressure to the maximum flow rate. The CFD prediction of fan performance accounted for all fan power losses including volumetric loss and disc friction loss. Several turbulence models were applied in order to verify the effect of turbulence modelling. The CFD results were compared with the experimental ones obtained for the laboratory tested fan and very good agreement was achieved near the best efficiency point. The CFD under- predicted the fan pressure at low flow rates, but the shut- off pressure was very close to the experimental one. The effect of impeller rotation was modeled by the frozen rotor approach and sliding mesh as well. The latter provided better prediction for the fan efficiency at overflow rates.
