The results presented in this paper show the removal of nitrogen substances (ammonia as nitrogen) from a chemically defined medium with the addition of detergents (LAS) with higher concentrations than are usually present in communal wastewaters and which are consider to be inhibitors of activity of the majority of the microorganisms of activated sludge. the results show that the use of a mixed culture composed of NI/DNI can prevent the inhibitory effect of LAS and achieve its biological degradation (mineralization) simultaneously with the process of nitrification and denitrification.
