Comparison of bipolar and tetrapolar techniques for measurement skeletal muscle bioimpedance
Ischaemic states, claudications or compartmental syndromes of lower leg skeletal muscles can be detected in relatively early phase by use of bioimpedance measurements. Methods are noninva-sive, simple, not expensive and require not highly skilled staff and medical environment. However, main problems of these measurements are reliability and repeatability of results. As it is evident that con-stant current methods are better, it remains the choice between bipolar and tetrapolar techniques. Dilemma is: is it better to measure bipolarly, includ-ing problems with electrode’s impedance influence or tetrapolarly, including risk of poor repeatability, due to the small distance between electrodes (consid-ering human lower legs dimensions).
