Could we avoid one stress by inducing another one?

Decrease in dry matter intake, blood flow in udder and absorption of electrolytes and microelements in dairy cows are influenced by heat stress. Therefore, different modification of diet is in use. It is known that higher cation intake increase dry matter intake. Cows were fed with TMR with lower amount of forage and addition of sodium bicarbonate (0.12 kg/day), magnesium oxide (0.04 kg/d) and glycerol (0.5kg/d). Acid base status is determined by RapidLab 348: blood pH, gasses in blood (pCO2, pO2), electrolytes (Na+, K+, HCO3-), base excess (BE ecf), oxygen saturation. Alteration in electrolytes and blood pH were determined. Evident marks were in group of high milk yield cows: high BE (9.4), pH toward alkalinity and high bicarbonate concentration. Alkali excess changes condition in rumen and could influence irrational nitrogen use by the micropopulation. It can also cause a burden on the liver. Higher alkaline substances intake, which ruminants normally have enough, raises the question about the kidneys load, because of the high amount of bicarbonate elimination. As a compensatory mechanism, hypopnea occur. Is it a new stress and new reason for low fertility? Can acid-base status be a stress marker?
