Transforming Cultural institutions: Searching for Viable Models as a Prerequisite for Independence, Artistic Excellence and Responsible Management
The article discusses the search for viable new models for cultural governance in diverse countries in so-called transition – notably Croatia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Poland. They are countries in which there has been a long and direct state interference in cultural matters. And in each there are different – more or less successful – strategies and possibilities according to differential historical experiences . In the most recent context, the article discusses economic austerity measures and budget cuts that have put enormous pressure on decision-makers, requiring radical reforms of the cultural sector, and with the focus now being put on economic and financial aspects.
