Experience in Current Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage in Croatia ; The Case of the Protective Cages
The idea of protective cages, placed above the well preserved shipwreck sites, still has good cultural heritage management potential. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that the benefits of such a methodology to date still do not outweigh the drawbacks, and therefore detailed future planning is required to develop it in the best possible way. However, the long-term vision of in situ protection should be one in which cages represent just one step on the path towards well- protected cultural and natural heritage zones where all activities are strictly controlled and there is no need to place physical protection over the sites.
