Bio-fortification of wheat by Se fertilization
Agronomic bio-fortification of wheat by Se fertilization can be the best approach to increase the Se intake by human, which is particularly low in South-East Europe. The bio- fortification experiments with three winter wheat cultivars treated with sodium selenate foliar- and soil-fertilization were conducted on two locations in Croatia and Serbia in two consecutive years to increase the Se concentration in bread-making wheat grain, the most consumed foodstuff in the region. Both, Se foliar-and soil-fertilization increased Se concentration in grains from to 2, 6- to 4, 6- fold. The concentration in grain was highest with Se foliar-fertilization of 10 g/ha and it increased by 29-32 ng/g Se dry weight for each g/ha of applied Se. The wheat cultivars differ significantly in the yield and in the Se uptake by the grains (g/ha Se). However, on average, there were not significant differences between wheat cultivars in their Se grain concentration.
