Assessing the proper wastewater treatment level according to marine ecosystem status
The northern Adriatic (NA) is one of the most productive parts of the Mediterranean Sea, due to the nutrient discharges of the surrounding rivers. To contribute to the understanding the linkage between water quality in marine ecosystems and activities in watersheds, model defining the state of the NA ecosystem has been developed. With the model, the proper wastewater treatment (WWT) level can be determined. Dataset used in research comprise physical, chemical and biological parameters, measured at six stations on the profile from the Po River delta (Italy) to Rovinj on the western Istrian coast (Croatia). To create the model, machine learning tool Multi Target Stepwise Model Tree Induction (MTSMOTI) was used to combine nutrient loads from watersheds and water quality indicators in NA. Nutrient loads from watershed have been calculated using ArcView Generalized Watershed Loading Function (AVGWLF) model. Using nutrient loads from watershed calculated with AVGWLF, MTSMOTI simulates chlorophyll-a (Cphl-a), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), total phosphorus (TP) and oxygen saturation (Osat) in NA from which trophic conditions of the ecosystem has been evaluated using TRIX (trophic index). Various scenarios have been made to evaluate different management options in the watershed and their influence on NA ecosystem through which the proper level of WWT was determine.
