Briquetting of Wood Waste – an Energy and Economy System Analysis

The compression of wood waste makes it possible to increase handling efficiency within the whole chain from wood waste generation to the end-user. A fully functional technique for compressing wood waste in briquettes (bark, saw-dust, chipped solid wood waste etc.) offers interesting possibilities for a system transition, new ways of thinking, and associated opportunities for increasing efficiency in the development of a system for delivering fuel and advanced biomass use. In the area of briquetting significant results have been achieved and in some Croatian regions the briquette market is already well established. Research has been conducted on wood waste, but also straw and maize stalk briquetting. The first commercial briquette production in Croatia started almost 20 years ago and there is a growing production tendency each year. In this paper, a system analysis has been used to analyze energy balance as well as economical features of briquette production in Croatia. Detailed measurements were conducted during 1999 in recently established briquetting plant within ITC wood industry in Varaždin, Croatia, a major furniture manufacturer in the area. In the analyses of briquette production process 3-phase asynchronous motor was used and electrical parameters (P, U, I) were entered into PC for data processing. In the analysis, relevant to Croatian conditions, each segment of briquetting process such as chipping, compressing and pneumatic transport was considered. Energy balance shows the amount of energy (both electricity and transport fuel) consumed in each part of the process and gives total energy consumption for production of waste wood briquettes of 244 kWh/tons of produced briquettes. Relevant briquette properties (moisture content, density and chemical content) were analyzed and showed. The analysis has shown a positive energy and economic balance, which is also confirmed by a growing trend in briquette production in the Republic of Croatia.
