Monitoring protocol for coralligenous community
Coralligenous outcrops are ecologically, aesthetically and economically valuable bioconstructions that are facing major threats in the Mediterranean. Therefore, coralligenous has been listed as a habitat needing rigorous protection by the Protocol for special protected areas (SPA/BIO) of the Barcelona convention and the Action plan for its conservation has been elaborated. Furthermore, it has been included in the priority habitat type “1170 Reefs“ by the EU Habitat Directive (92/43/EEC). Thus, its conservation status requires adequate monitoring. This manual describes monitoring protocol that combines non-destructive methods of photosampling and visual census to gather a comprehensive dataset on coralligenous habitat structure and function, as well as on the degree of impact of the main disturbances. In addition, using Croatia as a case study, it estimates logistics and the funds needed in order to fulfill associated monitoring and reporting requirements.
