Sources of Noise in Gray Component Replacement
Gray component replacement (GCR) is a useful technique of replacing the gray component in a mixture of chromatic inks (CMY) by a corresponding amount of black ink (K). As it reduces ink consumption, many methods and commercial solutions have been developed. This paper focuses on issues encountered in the process of developing a GCR method. While some printing processes are modelled easily and GCR can be applied with high accuracy, some processes turn out to be quite problematic. In such cases, although colorimetric accuracy may be met, GCR introduces noise into images. While many papers describe methods of circumventing the introduction of noise when applying GCR, there exist no analyses of why it appears only in some cases. This paper provides example of a printing process in which noise appears. The sources of noise are identified and solutions are recommended. It was found that with proper color space sampling the GCR model used in experiment provides noiseless solutions.
