Genetic properties of three maize dent doubled haploid lines populations adapted to Southeast Europe

Although the use of doubled haploid (DH) lines has become common practice in maize breeding, information about the use of DH lines in breeding programs of Southeast Europe –European Corn Belt is still lacking. Three biparental populations of DH maize lines (Os2702, Os2703 and Os2709) derived by in vivo haploid induction technique from crosses of five dent non-stiff stalk inbred lines were studied for genotypic characteristics. Population sizes ranged from 33 individuals (Os2702) to 68 individuals (Os2703). All three populations were quite small for quantitative genetic studies, but it was worthwhile to study their relatedness and genetic properties. They were genotyped by using the Illumina MaizeSNP50 BeadChip. Depending on the population, the proportion of polymorphic markers relative to all 50, 074 SNPs with known mapping position ranged from 5% to 20% polymorphism. Low levels of polymorphism indicated that some chromosomal regions are identical by descent. As expected, associations among the five parental lines based on modified Roger’s distance distinguished lines according to their respective background. Across all three populations, distorted markers were observed on all chromosomes, but certain chromosome regions were more affected than others. In the population 2703 large proportions of chromosome 7 were distorted confirming earlier findings that certain maize chromosomes are ubiquitously inclined to segregation distortion. Further studies on DH lines populations adapted to Southeast Europe which are developed from US Corn Belt and/or local dent germplasm would be useful for improving maize breeding programs in the region.
