Two Ill-Fated Rulers on the Christian-Ottoman Borderline: Wallachian Prince Vlad III Ţepeş Dracula and Bosnian King Stephen Tomašević

This paper attempted to analyze and compare the historical destinies of the Wallachian prince Vlad III Ţepeş Dracula (1448 ; 1456-62 ; 1476/77) and the last Bosnian king Stephen (Stjepan) Tomašević (1461-63), in the conditions of an increased Ottoman threat during the second reign of Mehmed II the Conqueror (1444-46 ; 1451-81). For a long time, Wallachia and Bosnia had a similar destiny as buffer states between Hungary and the Ottomans. The Hungarian Kingdom was also threatened at its borders by the advancement of the Ottoman Empire, which enjoyed the status of a superpower after 1453. The dual vassaldom of the Bosnian and Wallachian rulers to both the Hungarian crown and the Ottoman Porte (stipulated in the Ottoman-Hungarian treaties of the 1440s-50s) marked a very difficult period in the history of the two medieval states – both countries had to meet their obligations to and cope with the interfierences, mutually contradictory, from both sides. At the beginning of the 1460's, the Ottomans turned the scales in their favor in the whole of South-East Europe. The two Ottoman large-scale campaigns against Vlad Ţepeş and Stephen Tomašević, as well as the policy of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (1458-1490) towards his two vassals were the main issues dealt with in the paper. We have basically looked at the differences and similarities of Dracula’s and Tomašević’s relationship with Corvinus in the period immediately before and during the 1462/63 campaigns, of the two military conflicts as such, as well as of very early stories written after the Ottoman campaigns on the two rulers, one of the authors being Matthias himself.
