Colloidal aspects of materials used in organic bioelectronics
The aim of the lecture is to introduce the topic of "colloidal aspects" of materials to an audience of PhD students with different background, working in the field of organic (bio)electronics. Thereby, the importance of the forces that govern structuring of the materials at the "meso-scale", will be demonstrated in the context of understanding the structures and phenomena observed in organic electronic devices, such as ion diffusion and accumulation at interfaces, the electrostatic field exerted by polyelectrolytes, adsorption of macromolecules, organic film adhesion etc. Accompanied by several simple problems and demonstrations, the lecture is divided into three parts: (a) ion diffusion in homogeneous and discontinuous medium, (b) ion accumulation at interfaces and build-up of the electrical double layer and (c) the adsorption of (macro)molecules and adhesion force.
