The mud mounds in Promina Beds, area of Lišane Ostrovičke(northern Dalmatia)
The Promina Beds in northern Dalmatia are ~ 2000 m thick, syn-tectonic calciclastic succession of Eocene-Oligocene neritic to terrestrial deposits originated within evolving orogenic wedge-top (“piggy-back”) basin. In the Middle Eocene the development of this basin is recognized by formation of a series of SW-vergent blind-thrust growth folds, which were uplifted higher enough to avoid drowning and where bauxites, occasionally, were accumulated. In the late Eocene, the tectonic deformation enhanced the growth of blind-thrust anticlines within wedge-top basin, dividing the basin into several semi-isolated high-relief marine sub-basins (synclinal troughs). The one of them is Ostrovica sub-basin, a SE-trending synclinal trough formed in outer part of the Promina Beds belt and which were filled with sediments from its two opposing synclinal limbs.
