Cerebrovascular reactivity in migraine : a correlation with plasma 5HT level
The assessment of cerebral vasoreactive changes and plasma level of 5HT was analysed by TCD in 26 patients with classic migraine. Results: during the migraine attack, the plasma 5HT level was significantly reduced (p<0.001). The MBFVs were also significantly reduced ipsilaterally to the head pain attacks, especially in MCA (p<0.001). In the headache-free period, the MBFVs were normal or increased, and the plasma 5HT level was in normal ranges. Conclusions: Lower plasma 5HT level during migraine attack is closely associated with lower MBFVs in all arteries of the circle of Willis, especially in MCA. TCD offers a quickly, easy and non-invasive diagnostic assessment of hemodynamic cerebral changes in migraine patients.
