The influence of smoking and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) upon annual FEV1 decline in healthy persons.
The aim oft his study was to investigate the influence of smoking and BHR upon annual decline of FEV1 in healthy persons with normal function. FEV1 was measured once a year for 5 consecutive years in 32 smokers (22.4±3.3 cigarettes per day, age 42.4±8.1 years) and 28 nonsmokers (39.6±9.5 years). In conclusion, concomitant existence of smoking and BHR sustantially increases in normal annual decline of FEV1 in otherwise healthy persons. However presence of BHR eve nin nonsmoking persons slightly increased annual decline of FEV1. It seems that BHR testing can disclose those smokers which will have bigger annual FEV1 decline, thus helping in early diagnosis of COPD.
