Personal digital information archiving among students of social sciences and humanities

As both active participants in information society who use information and communication technology and computer technology, different gadgets and social media on an everyday basis and academic citizens who use different digital technology in their academic life, students produce huge amounts of personal digital data and documents. It is therefore important to raise questions about their awareness, responsibility, tendencies and activities they undertake to preserve their collective digital heritage. To analyse the ways in which students of humanities and social sciences engage in activities of preserving digital data and documents, we conducted a survey amongst students from four different Croatian universities. Altogether, 227 online questionnaires were completed, and the gathered data were analysed using the SPSS program. A quantitative method of analysis was used to interpret the students' answers and to identify their habits and practices when archiving personal digital information. Results have shown a positive correlation between respondents who are aware of the importance of managing digital data and documents and those who actually put an effort into organising personal digital belongings. They've also shown that students plan their activities when it comes to a preservation process, but that it is done mostly for the data and documents they view as important or that they might need in the future. Students' managing practices are primarily based on organizing documents into folders by the criteria of document type and importance, while using specific tools to manage their collections is very rare. This research shows that humanities and social sciences students are not only aware, but they also endeavour to manage and archive their private digital legacy using basic and common organizing strategies and practices.
