Metabolic changes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the most common chronic respiratrory disease with the progressive course. Development of complications is associated with oxidative stress and progression of systemic inflammation and metabolic distrubances. Altered muscle amino acid metabolism resulting in skeletal muscle dysfunction is one oft he prominent systemic effects in COPD. We investigated extent of change sin the activities of enzymes involved int he aminoacid metabolism - alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma gluthamyl transferase (GGT) ; enzyme involved in bone rearrangement – alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), enzyme reflecting hypoxia, characteristic of COPD patients. In addition, effect of cigarette smoking on these enzyme activities was also assessed.
