With Sword or by Marriage? Social Connections of Slavonian Nobility at the Court of Sigismund of Luxemburg (1387-1437)

This paper deals with political activity of the nobility of Slavonia in the turbulent period after the death of King Louis I of Hungary. Prosopographic analysis will try to depict which of the factors prevailed on choosing sides in the civil war or later foreign policy of King Sigismund. Furthermore, the paper will show how the nobility of Slavonia was involved in the court life, and if the reasons for their activity were based more on their relationships on the court, country life, class solidarity or perhaps, finally, marriage strategies of their families. On the examples from the mid-ranked and lesser nobility it will be emphasized how royal court was an excellent place for social climb, individual careers and family’s position within both local and royal milieu.
