Importance of cooperation between clinical investigators and laboratory personnel for success of clinical study

Introduction: Clinical research is tremendously important part of health science. A clinical study involves research using human volunteers, called participants. It is intended to add to medical knowledge. There are two main types of clinical studies: clinical trials, called interventional studies, and observational studies. Clinical research results are collected to produce a new treatment or to improve existing one. Aim of this work is to present importance of multidisciplinary and international approach for success of clinical study. Materials and methods: Clinical study was performed in University hospital center with international collaboration. It was performed by experienced and trained investigators, doctors by assistance of nurses, technicians and other health care professionals. Laboratory diagnostic procedures performed during study were cooperated with skilled laboratory personnel. Extensive experimental laboratory methods were performed internationally (Austria ; France). Result: Clinical studies can be conducted in various locations, including hospitals, universities, doctors' offices, and community clinics. They can be sponsored, national or international. Clinical trials are led by a principal investigator, frequently a medical doctor. Research team may include doctors, nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals. All participants are valuable workforce in outcome of research. Sample collection and following analysis have to be performed according to predefined study protocol. Input of experienced laboratory personnel is important for protocol design in terms of adequate use of various equipment, number and size of samples, sample preparation, storage and transportation conditions, and all other requirements which have to be determined prior commencement of study. Quality, timely exchange of information implying special requirements, timelines, instruction and guidelines are essentials in conducting and performing trials. Use of highly specific, validated methods and following the protocols enables investigator to innovate. Conclusion: Clinical research is the essence of future medicine. Clinical studies are designed to add to medical knowledge related to the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of diseases or conditions. Exceptional teamwork between scientists and experts of different specialities especially laboratory personnel is crucial in order to function precisely. Innovative solutions can be achieved only by involved multidisciplinary health care professionals with the assistance of experienced laboratory workforces.
