Royal Knights of Zadar in the Time of King Sigismund of Luxemburg
Taking over the Hungarian-Croatian crown king Sigismund of Luxembourg, like his predecessor king Louis of Anjou, decided to empower his royalty in the communes of Eastern Adriatic coast by creating a special types of his followers, the royal knights. They represented a political elite the most responsible for the establishment and preservation of the king's reign. Among of all Dalmatian commues special place belonged to commune of Zadar which from the time of king Louis of Anjou held a control position between the East and West sides of the Adriatic sea. Therefore, the largest number of royal knights originated from this commune and were members of the famous patrician families of Zadar. In gratitude for their loyalty on one hand and having in mind easier way of controlling Dalmatian cities on the other, the king gave them the most important city functions (such as rector, judge etc.), and most of them have been placed as comes in various Dalmatian towns. Therefore, the aim of this work is on the ground of published and unpublished archival sources which were kept in the State archive in Zadar present a short biographies of the persons who at the time of Sigismund's regin became the royal knights.
