Environmental concerns, pro-environmental behavior and climate-change-constrained food security concerns in European core and semiperiphery

In this paper we explore the extent to which general expression of food security concerns related to climate change is reflected in self- reported individual attitudes and behaviours among ‘rich’ and ‘poor’ European nations. In order to do so we use the ISSP research module Environment survey data from 2011, analysing comparative findings for 18 European nation- samples. Following previous analyses based on differences in GDP pc, inequality-adjusted national income (GNI), risk of poverty, dominant social paradigm and ‘knowledge society context’ we divide these 18 nation- samples into 12 ‘core’ (relatively wealthier) and 6 ‘semiperipheral’ (relatively poorer) European nations. Prevalence of general concern about the environmental threats posed by climate change, use of pesticides and chemicals, and introduction of GMO is shown across 18 nationsamples, noting overall differences between core and semiperipheral groups. These are then contrasted with self-reported individual pro-environmental behaviour, concern and activation, and material sacrifice indices constructed on the said nation-samples. We aim to indicate the difference in democratic potential to respond to socially mediated consequences of climate change and adaptation- driven cultural transition between different groups of European populations.
