The importance of cultural tourism in the development of Croatian tourism

Development of cultural tourism in Croatia was systematically approached in 2003 with preparation of the Development Strategy of Cultural Tourism and its implementation through the Croatian National Tourist Board Office for Cultural Tourism and the Croatian Chamber of Economy Association for Cultural Tourism. By developing of cultural tourism, the tourism sector tends to enrich the tourist offer in order to overcome structural problems of Croatian tourism such as strong seasonality and geographic concentration of demand along the Adriatic coast. However, the interests of the cultural sector are in the financial effects arising from its effective inclusion in the tourist offer. Tourists who are classified as "cultural tourists" have incomes significantly higher than the average tourists and tend to spend more money on holidays (not only for cultural purposes, but during the entire journey). The development of cultural tourism was particularly important for the destinations not having their own image or the image was not developed enough to be recognizable on the market. The World Travel Organization (WTO) has predicted the increase in demand by 15% annually in the sector of cultural tourism by 2020, while the cultural tourism market sector has the business scope of 50 billion Euros a year. The subject article/lecture will briefly present the development of cultural tourism in Croatia, the problems and difficulties in its implementation, and in particular the successes through several best practice examples that will demonstrate the importance of cultural tourism in the overall development of tourism in Croatia.
