Gap analysis of industrial energy management systems : case study Slovenia

Industrial energy management systems (EMSs), which comprise ICT solutions, upfront services, and ongoing monitoring and management, enable industrial companies to actively manage their energy consumption and energy procurement activities. Energy management systems are usually tailored to the specific industrial needs but may offer limited functionalities, mostly as a result of different identified gaps (process simplifications, improper measurement points, lack of motivation, etc.). For analysing the gaps and evaluation of energy management systems use in Slovenian industry, a survey has been conducted. The results of the survey presented in this paper, have shown that the use of energy management systems in industry is recognised as a potential competitiveness advantage by most of the addressed companies. Furthermore, motivation has been highlighted as an important prerequisite for process and structural improvements and reported as not sufficiently addressed yet. Also the importance of strong cooperation with different levels of industry actors, namely executive and shop floor is addressed. In the conclusion the possibilities for new opportunities in exploitation of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources through the use of industrial energy management systems are discussed.
