Comparison of the inhaled bronchodilator: fenoterol, ipratropium and salbutamol in children with bronchial asthma
The aim: Comparison of the efficacy of inhaled bronchodilator: Salbutamol (S. Ventolin), Ipratropium bromide (I, Atrovent), Fenoterol (F, Berotec) and Fenoterol/Ipratropium combinaation (FI, Berodual) in children with mild and moderate asthma. Subjects and methods: 80 children, age 5-16 years old, with mild and moderate asthma, selected by the method of random sample among asthmatic outpatients. They were divided into four groups of 20 children each, who did not differ statistically by their age and sex. Each group was inhaled with one bronchodilator (S, I, F and FI). All measurements were done by Pneumoscope Jaeger. All children underwent the flow-volume curve measurement int he initial state (A), ½ (B) and 3 (C) hours after the inhalation of bronchodilator. The inhalation was done with the inhaler, in following dose: S: 0.1 mg/kg per body mass (max. 5.0 mg Ventolin sol.), I: 0.25 mg (10 drops Atrovent sol.), F: 0.5 mg (5 drops Berotec 0.1% sol.) and FI 0.5-0.63 mg F + 0.25-0.31 mg I (20-25 drops Berodual sol.), with 3 ml 0.9% NaCl. Statistics: Oneway analysis of variance, Duncan, Friedman and Mann-Whitney tests were used. The measured values are shown as percentage oft he predicted values (Knudson). Results: After inhalation statistically significant improvement of all parameters within the examined groups ocurred (S, I, F and FI). A, B and C measurements did not show statistically significant difference among the groups. The difference of B and A values did not show statistically significant differences among the groups. The difference of C and a values is statistically significant for FVC (p=0.01) and FEV1 (p=0.04) for groups I and F in relation to groups S and IF. Conclusion: Bronchodilator S and FI combination are equally effective in causing and retaining the bronchodilatation in children with mild and moderate asthma, in distinction from the groups I and F where this effect last longer.
