Comparing the energy efficiency of a timber curtain wall with an aluminium system
TimberCW - a frame system of spatially laminated wood profiles was designed that enabled the construction of fully unitised structurally glazed curtain wall units for the envelope of high-rise buildings. The system was analysed, full-scale laboratory tested and certified. The goal in the development of the TimberCW was to develop an environmental friendly system with 0% aluminium content, having physical, structural and aesthetic performance equal to or better than equivalent aluminium systems. Comparative thermal transmittance analysis and condensation risk assessment of the TimberCW vs fully unitised aluminium systems of identical overall geometry and structural performance are presented.
