CRITERIA FOR DEVELOPING TRANSFORMATION MODELS OF URBAN HISTORICAL PATHWAYS AND ROADWAYS

Urban transformations are a common topic of urban studies especially from 20th century when the cities were changing drastically under the influence of new lifestyles, new technologies and various population changes. Transformations vary according to the scale of design project, but the need for them in the cities is a constant due to a demand for cities to develop and become more competitive. In urban transformations streets are always one of the layers in a wider project idea. Sustainability orientation of the 21st century has put a huge challenge on cities. One part of discussions is dealing with strategies such as eco-friendly cities and cities as an eco-system. Important element of sustainability is a connectivity criterion in general, where streets are seen as the resource for public space, ecological corridors and infrastructure at the same time. The shift that is needed is from urban transformation into the research of exact context related types of transformations. Proposed research gives this opposition, where various transformation models will be compared along the street area and connections types in order to better understand the concepts of connectivity in sustainability strategies for the cities. Streets have been the topic of urban planning theory and projects as the main public places together with squares and parks. Studies with the focus on streets separately from squares and other spaces are mainly orientated on traffic issues, but other planning aspects are not explored enough. Therefore, this research focuses on specific historical pathways and streets in the cities from planning perspective dealing with urban heritage in a relation to the transformation caused by urban growth. The focus is on those pathways, which used to connect periphery and historical city centre from the early beginning of the settlement development, where we can observe all transformation models. PhD Thesis proposes the classification of historical pathway transformations based on a case study analysis of the main cities in the parts of former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Current stage of the research comprises of a year research data on a case study of Zagreb. The main questions are how, when and to what extend have pathways, with a historical heritage value, transformed into the urban streets. In that way, it is possible to define links between heritage of streets and urban planning in the context of city network of motion and public space. Aim is to define methods and measurable elements of analysis in two scales – city and street level and in two aspects – historical and contemporary. Historical transformation models of streets would be established at the city level. Hypothesis is that out of qualitative and quantitative data there is possible to elaborate criteria for the future transformation that comes out of the street level of analysis. These criteria and guidelines could lead to contemporary transformation sub-models, which would be tested in the field research.
