EFFECT OF GONADECTOMY ON LIPID METABOLISM INDICATORS AND OXIDATIVE STRESS IN SWINE BLOOD SERUM AND MYOCARDIUM
Most cardiovascular diseases are connected with cellular and tissue damage caused by a long-term exposure to oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate potential gender-related differences of lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in swine blood serum and myocardium. The study was conducted on 20 clinically healthy sexually mature Sewdish Landrace swine. At four weeks of age 5 males and 5 females were gonadectomised (orchiectomy and ovariectomy), and the rest of the pigs (5 males and 5 females) were sham operated in the same way without testes and ovary removal. Blood samples were taken by puncture of v. jugularis in tubes without anticoagulant at the age of 10 months. In the blood serum the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GSH-RD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as concentration of triacylglycerols, phospholipids, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, free fatty acids (FFA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined. Pigs were slaughtered at ten months of age, and in the heart muscle (left ventricle) the activities of GSH-Px, GSH-RD, SOD, and concentrations of triacylglycerols, phospholipids, cholesterol and MDA were determined. The results have shown that feameles have significantly higher (p<0.05) levels of GSH-Px, cholesterol and phospholipids than males in their blood serum. Gonadectomised males had significantly higher (p<0.05) blood serum GSH-Px and HDL-cholesterol levels than males, while gonadectomised females had significantly lower (p<0.05) triacylglycerols, phospholipids and cholesterol than females. The GSH-Px activity in heart muscle of feamale swine was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the one in males pigs. The lowest level of MDA was found in the blood serum and heart muscle of feamales, and the highest in gonadectomised males (p<0.05). The most preferable LDL:HDL and GSH-Px:SOD ratio in blood serum of females, as well as a lower concentration of MDA in serum and heart muscle of feamales, indicate better resistance of female pigs to oxidative stress, which coul be caused by estrogen antioxidative effect.
