The effect of active participation in associations on social capital formation in Croatia
In the structure of social capital, empirical evidence indicates social networks, i.e., participation as one of its most important dimensions. However, the results are mixed when activity in participation is considered. This paper examines the role of activity in participation and social capital formation, compares and summarizes the results of two estimated models for Croatia, i.e., the model that does not distinguish between active and passive participation and the model that puts emphasis only on active participation. Thereby, social capital is defined as a complex construct of third-order composed of social trust, participation and civism. The results indicate that the difference between active and passive participants is important, and hence encouragement of civic engagement should be promoted in order to enrich social capital.
