Émilie du Châtelet and Josip Ruđer Bošković
In our presentation we are inquiring into a possible influence of Émilie du Châtelet on the natural philosophy of Josip Ruđer Bošković (Josephus Rogerius Boscovich, 1711 – 1787). The basis for the assumption of her influence on Bošković is her letter from 1745 in which she asks François Jacquier to provide her with “la dissertation de votre ami sur les forces vives”, referring to Boškovićs’ work De viribus vivis (published in 1745). On the other hand, Bošković mentioned du Châtelet twice: in his book De viribus vivis and in the De continuitatis lege (1754). The both contextes of Bošković's mentioning du Châtelet, show a great admiration he had for her despite the fact that their basic philosophical positions were different (Bošković sided more with Cartesian side in the debate on living forces, whereas du Châtelet was more inclined to Leibnizian interpretation). A possible influence of du Châtelet’s writings on Bošković we conjecture to find in his discussion on different velocities and forces which include distinctions that can be found in her Instituions physique.
